New Leaked images for the upcoming movie for Godzilla:Minus One offer’s a closer look at Godzilla’s new redesign in the film. Godzilla Minus One takes place in Japan after World War II, and sees Godzilla attacking the nation as they try to recover. It is the first live-action Godzilla film to be produced by Toho since 2016’s Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.
Godzilla’s new design in Godzilla Minus One indicates the massive force of nature he will be in the film. Much like the original Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One takes place in the years following World War II, meaning the movie could explore the aftermath of the destruction Japan faced during the war. This means Godzilla could be returning to his roots as a metaphor for nuclear arms, a living embodiment of the unintended consequences associated with designing such weapons of war.
It seems Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki plans on leaning into the horrifying aspects of a rage-filled Godzilla decimating Japan. Given his massive spikes and destructive nature, it seems Godzilla Minus One‘s version of the King of the Monsters won’t be a heroic rendition.
